A pool or patio that goes dark at 8pm is half a backyard. Here is how to extend your outdoor living season with the right lighting.
Why Pool and Patio Lighting Is Different
Pool and patio lighting has to do several things at once: provide enough light for safety and navigation, create an atmosphere that makes the space enjoyable after dark, and integrate with the rest of the landscape lighting system so the whole backyard feels cohesive.
The mistake most people make is treating pool and patio lighting as a separate project from the rest of their landscape lighting. The better approach is to design the whole system together so the pool deck, the surrounding plant beds, and the house all work as one composition at night.
What We Install Around Pools and Patios
Deck and hardscape lighting. Low-profile fixtures mounted in retaining walls, steps, and seat walls cast light downward onto the surface. This provides safety without glare and creates a warm, layered effect that looks expensive and intentional.
Plant bed uplighting. The plants and trees around a pool become dramatic features at night with the right uplighting. A large ornamental grass, a weeping cherry, or a stand of ornamental grasses lit from below transforms the space from a swimming pool to an outdoor room.
Perimeter path lighting. The path from the house to the pool and around the perimeter should be clearly lit for safety. We space path lights to provide consistent illumination without the runway effect of too many fixtures too close together.
Rhode Island Pool Season
Rhode Island pool season runs May through September, but the best pool evenings are in July and August when it stays light until 8pm and the air is warm enough to be outside well into the night. Good landscape lighting extends those evenings, when the sun goes down, the pool area transforms rather than going dark.
We serve pool and patio lighting clients throughout Rhode Island, including Barrington, Bristol, East Greenwich, Narragansett, Newport, North Kingstown, Portsmouth, and Westerly. Contact us for a free design plan for your backyard.
